When my daughter was born she came out with little to no hair. She had some at the top but was nearly bare on the sides and back. My baby was healthy and that is all that mattered. However, she had cradle cap and her scalp was irritated because of it. She was also experiencing hair loss. After doing some research, I came up with a regimen that promotes hair growth and prevention. Here are 6 tips on how to prevent baby bald spot & remedies for baby hair loss.
1. Moisturize!
The best thing you can do to prevent baby bald spot is to moisturize their hair and scalp. Moisture can prevent breakage and promote hair growth. If your child is already starting to lose their hair, start moisturizing their hair right away. I found that organic coconut oil helps promote hair growth and is very mild for baby’s skin.
2. Less Tension is Better
While trying to promote hair growth and retain your baby’s hair, use less tension when styling your baby’s hair. When you add tension to your baby’s hair, this damages their hair follicles which will cause slow hair growth. Let your baby rock their natural curls. You can also do finger coils. The less tension they have on their scalp the better chances they will have to grow a head full of hair.
3. Use Silk Sheets
Have you ever noticed that your baby has hair in their crib? Changing out your baby’s crib sheets can help with retaining their hair. Silk sheets will glide over your baby’s hair and will not pull it out compared to cotton sheets. You should never put a scarf or bonnet on their head while they are sleeping as this can lead to suffocation. Silk sheets will promote hair retention while also giving your baby a good night sleep.
4. Rotate Baby’s Head While Sleep
Rotating your baby’s head while they are sleeping will make sure that they do not wear out their hair in one spot. When your baby lay on the same side of their head, it will cause their hair to come out. This is caused by tension and rubbing your baby does against their bed. When your baby is a newborn they tend to move their head left to right. This is because they haven’t built the strength to lift their head yet. Try holding your baby to prevent their head from rubbing against surfaces that will cause hair loss.
5. Promote Tummy Time
Tummy time will help with hair growth tremendously. It is important for your baby learns how to control their neck and lift their head up. This will prevent them from rubbing their hair out and causing a bald spot. Tummy time is also important for their growth and development. You will be solving two issues with one solution when your baby has tummy time.
6. Try to Limit the use of Combs and Brushes
Most times when a baby is born their hair is soft and fine and it doesn’t take much to maintain their hair. Try to stay away from combs and brushes as these can pull strands of hair out during use. If your baby has a thicker texture of hair, try using a baby brush and comb. These hair utensils have soft bristles on the brush and balls on the teeth of the comb to make sure that your baby is comfortable while getting their hair styled
One Thing to Consider
These tips on how to prevent baby bald spot & remedies for baby hair loss helped me to grow my daughter’s hair. If you try these tips and they do not work it is okay. Genetics play a big role in whether your baby will have a head full of hair or not. The most important thing to remember is that your baby is healthy and happy.
